The Next Century of Your Library
Our story began nearly 100 years ago. In 1926, the North Canton Public Library Association was formed, and by 1928, a single room in the Community Building on Main Street was dedicated as a library. Since then, this library has grown alongside our community, evolving to meet changing needs while remaining a constant, trusted space.
Today, as we approach our next century, we have a new opportunity: to reimagine our building in a way that reflects how our community uses the library now and how it will in the years to come.
August Service Updates
As we prepare for our temporary move, a few services will be paused or adjusted.
Toolbox Library & Teen Board Games
These collections are temporarily unavailable for checkout.
Interlibrary Loans (SEO ILL)
Beginning August 1: New SEO ILL requests will no longer be accepted.
Beginning August 21: All existing SEO ILL holds will be suspended until we reopen in our temporary location.
If you already have an ILL request in progress, we’ll continue processing it through August 20 and will make every effort to get your materials to you before the move.
Hotspots
Hotspots will not be available beginning August 15 until we reopen in our temporary location.
Community Exploration Passes
Holds are temporarily paused and will resume once we reopen in our temporary location.
Frequently Asked Questions
We can’t wait to share our plans with you as soon as they are finalized! Meanwhile, library staff are actively working on detailed service plans to ensure the community continues to have access to library services throughout the project.
Will the library close?
Our Main Street building will close, but library service won’t stop.
During construction, patrons will visit our temporary location at the former D-BAT facility in the Hoover District instead of 185 North Main Street. Construction requires the building to be closed for the safety of patrons, staff, and contractors.
As we finalize plans, we’ll continue sharing information about available services, hours, and what to expect during the renovation.
When will construction begin?
Construction is currently expected to begin early September 2026.
Where exactly will the library be relocated?
During construction, the North Canton Public Library will temporarily operate from the former D-BAT facility at the Hoover Site, located at 339 East Maple Street, Suite 255, North Canton, OH 44720. The temporary library will be located on the second floor of the building.
The Main Street building at 185 North Main Street will be closed to the public throughout construction. All library visits, including browsing, checking out materials, picking up holds, using public computers, and receiving assistance from staff, will take place at our temporary location.
How to find us:
- Enter the Hoover Site from East Maple Street.
- Follow signs for the former D-BAT facility.
- The library is located on the second floor (Suite 255) accessible by elevator or stairs.
- Free parking is available on site.
Why is the library relocating during construction?
The decision to temporarily relocate library services was not made lightly. Before deciding to move, the North Canton Public Library evaluated multiple options for continuing operations while renovating our nearly 75-year-old building.
Ultimately, we determined that temporarily relocating library services is the safest and most efficient approach for both patrons and staff. The renovation involves extensive work throughout the building, including improvements to major building systems, infrastructure, and public spaces. Keeping the building open during active construction would mean ongoing noise, dust, changing access routes, temporary barriers, and frequent disruptions to library services.
By relocating to a temporary facility, construction crews can work more efficiently while library visitors continue to enjoy a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for browsing, studying, attending programs, using computers, and accessing library services.
Although a temporary move is an adjustment for everyone, we believe it will allow us to complete the project more quickly and provide the best possible experience for both our patrons and our staff throughout the renovation.
Why D-BAT?
Our Board and staff evaluated a number of temporary locations. The former D-BAT space offered enough room to continue providing library services while allowing construction to move forward as efficiently as possible. Keeping library services accessible to our community during the renovation was an important priority, and this location helps us continue serving our patrons while work is underway.
How can I return items I've borrowed?
With construction activity increasing, our Main Street book drops will close Thursday, September 10 at midnight and will not be available after that time.
But please don’t worry!
Due dates have been extended through at least September 21. If our temporary Home Base in the Hoover District isn’t open by then, we’ll extend them again.
We also plan to move one of our book drops to the Hoover District parking lot soon so you’ll have a place to return materials before our temporary location opens.
Will my favorite programs still be offered during the renovation?
Yes! Many of the programs you know and love are coming with us to our temporary location, including:

We’ll also continue offering one-time programs and special events. A complete schedule will be released each month while we’re in our temporary location.
Senior Center programs will continue each Tuesday and Thursday at the North Canton Civic Center.

Programs will be held in our temporary program room in the Hoover District.
Will I still be able to check out books and use library services?
Yes. Maintaining access to library services is a major priority, and we are continuing to offer as many services as possible for patrons throughout construction.
What services will still be available during the renovation?

Because our temporary location has less space, some collections will be unavailable until we return to our renovated library.
When will the renovation be complete?
Construction is estimated to end in summer 2027.
How is this project being funded?
The North Canton Public Library has spent years planning and saving for this renovation. Through careful financial stewardship, the Library has already secured the majority of the funding needed for the project through existing capital reserves that were intentionally set aside over time. Additional funding includes generous private support and limited financing approved by the Board of Trustees.
Throughout the planning process, the Library has worked closely with architects, engineers, and construction professionals to refine the project, evaluate alternatives, and identify opportunities to reduce costs while preserving the improvements that matter most to our community. Every major decision has been guided by a commitment to responsible stewardship of public resources.
This renovation is not being funded through a new tax levy. The Library has no plans to seek a levy to pay for this construction project.
By planning ahead, saving over many years, and making thoughtful financial decisions throughout the design process, the Library is able to invest in a safer, more accessible, and more sustainable facility while remaining fiscally responsible to the community.
Are you still accepting donations of used books, DVDs, and CDs?
We’re sorry, but we are unable to accept your used item donations at this time due to a lack of storage space.
