Little Art Gallery
The Little Art Gallery was established in 1930 in a second-floor room of the North Canton Public Library, then located in a frame house on Main Street where the North Canton YMCA currently stands. The Hoover Company and two Hoover employees, Ellsworth Smith and Esta Stoner, were instrumental in the conception of the gallery. The Little Art Gallery’s permanent collection has grown to include more than 200 pieces. The gallery opens a new fine art exhibit every four to six weeks and provides free public art classes for students of all ages.

Meet the Curator
Elizabeth Blakemore has been the curator of the Little Art Gallery in North Canton, Ohio, since 2007. She oversees the gallery, a permanent collection of over 200 works, and organizes art classes for patrons of all ages. Over her tenure, she has worked with hundreds of artists and creative professionals, curating approximately 200 exhibitions, showcasing a diverse range of artistic styles and mediums. Graduating cum laude from Kent State University with a BA in art education, she began her career as an art teacher and security threat group coordinator with the Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS). At DYS, the focus was placed on art as a form of therapeutic escape and refuge. Studying gang signs and symbols at federal and state levels, Elizabeth utilized knowledge of art as an ever-changing language. Later, she continued her education in art therapy and counseling at Ursuline College. She continues to create works of art for personal expression and as a commissioned artist. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries in North Carolina, Ohio, and Puerto Rico, and numerous pieces are housed in private collections. Blakemore has a passion for art and is committed to the local art scene. She strives to maintain the gallery’s success and its role in enriching the cultural landscape of North Canton.

Upcoming Exhibits
Art Therapy: Drawn from Within
Art Therapy is the deliberate use of art to meet psychological needs. It is not only to teach art techniques, but to bring about the release of a client’s conflicts, inner thoughts and fantasies through graphic expression. Art therapy is an alternate means of communication and a creative experience that promotes maturation and intellectual growth. It is the use of visual arts as a healing technique. This exhibit celebrates the 2023 licensure of Art Therapy in the state of Ohio. For more information, visit the American Art Therapy Association at arttherapy.org.
Transcendence
Dennis Kleidon uses the power of creativity and the discipline of design thinking as an author, graphic designer, and fine artist. His paintings have been shown nationwide in museums, galleries, and art shows. His Transcendence paintings symbolize the conversion of one’s life to a new and exciting future vision. Kleidon wants the freedom, power, and optimism of his paintings to enrich the lives of all who see and own them. He says, “Experience the excitement of bold colors in motion and their abstract implications. Become saturated with their visual and transformative potential.”
Permanent Collection
The Little Art Gallery is home to a permanent collection of original art by area artists and artists whose work has had an impact on our artistic community. In 1944, the Little Art Gallery acquired the first piece of its permanent collection, donated by the Women’s Club of North Canton. Since then, the collection has grown to include more than 200 pieces.
The oldest piece in our on-site collection is “Flowers on Bible”, by artist Ferdinand A. Brader. This piece was created in 1892 and was acquisitioned by the Little Art Gallery in 2015, in conjunction with the exhibit “The Legacy of Ferdinand A. Brader.”
Friends of the Little Art Gallery
The Friends of the Little Art Gallery (FLAG) organization was formed in 1968 to assist the Little Art Gallery and remains committed to this need today. FLAG provides awards for the annual May Show, receptions for exhibiting artists, scholarships for gallery-sponsored classes, purchase of original works of art and permanent improvement projects in the gallery.
