We are Sensory-Inclusive

KultureCity is the world’s leading nonprofit on sensory accessibility and acceptance. NCPL and KultureCity have joined forces to make a visit to the library a great experience for everyone, including those with sensory-processing needs.

Sensory Bags Available

Weighted Lap Pads and Sensory Bags (with noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, and other resources) are available at our Circulation and Children’s desks.

A Quiet Zone has been established in our Little Art Gallery.

A Social Story for our Library is available through the KultureCity app.

Additional Accessible Services, Tools, & Features

The North Canton Public Library provides a variety of accessible services and tools for people of all abilities.

In Motion Delivery Service

We offer delivery service to those who are recuperating from an illness, are homebound, have welcomed a new child to their family, or are caring for a family member who isn’t well and can’t visit the library.

Accessible Design

Our water bottle filling stations, drinking fountains, self-checkout machines, and one of our interior book returns are set at accessible heights.

Wheelchair Use

We have a wheelchair available for public use inside our building.

Wheelchair Charging Station

Find our wheelchair charging station across from the circulation desk on the library’s main floor.

Adult Changing Table

One of the restrooms on our main floor is equipped with an adult changing table.

Aunt Flow Dispensers

Our restrooms are equipped with period product dispensers that are ADA-compliant and free-vend, so no one has to use a quarter to get a product out of the machine.

Large Print Books & Audiobooks

Large-print books and audiobooks can be reserved through our online library catalog or by calling the reference desk at 330.499.4712 x311. Audiobooks can also be downloaded from the Digital Materials section of our website.

Hearing Assistance Devices

We provide assistive listening technology via hearing loops in our lower-level program rooms and audio assistance at the Civic Center for our Senior Center programming.

Deaf-Friendly

We acquired a Deaf-Friendly Business designation through Hoover High School’s SIGNing TOWN initiative.

Vision Assistance

Our children’s department has Braille blocks as well as a Braille version of Harry Potter. We have a wide selection of large-print books, audiobooks, and eAudiobooks. We also offer CD players in our ToolBox.

Web Browsing Tools

Tools are available to improve the web-browsing experience for people with a visual impairment or vision loss. Objects can be made bigger and easier to see by adjusting the text size and screen magnification in a browser’s Settings menu. These options are typically listed under Preferences or View. Most modern browsers also offer a screen reader that renders text and image content as speech.

Memory Care Kits

Our memory care kits are designed for people with Alzheimer’s, dementia, memory loss or cognitive impairment. Each themed kit is a collection of items, including but not limited to books, puzzles, fidget devices, tools, games, toys, memorabilia, and art supplies. These items are designed to help individuals experiencing memory loss engage their senses, trigger memories, and facilitate communication with a caregiver or loved one.

A Note about Service Animals

The North Canton Public Library welcomes patrons who use service animals as determined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A service animal (dog or miniature horse only) is an animal that has been individually trained to work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability. The work or task must be directly related to that person’s disability.

Animals that are considered pets, or comfort, therapy, or support animals, are not service animals as defined by the ADA and are not permitted on Library property at this time. (Exceptions will be made for animals in the building as part of Library educational and recreational programming, pending approval by the Director or his/her designee.)
